Musician Eddie Van Halen Died At 65

Dutch-American musician, songwriter & producer, Eddie Van Halen has died on Tuesday morning after a long battle with cancer. He was 65.

According to TMZ reports, Eddie has been battling cancer for well over a decade. he’s been in and out of the hospital over the past year, including last November for intestinal issues, and recently underwent a round of chemo. Last year, Eddie was flying between the US and Germany for 5 years to get radiation treatment.

Van Halen’s son Wolf announced the news via social media, he wrote, “I can’t believe I’m having to write this, but my father, Edward Lodewijk Van Halen, has lost his long and arduous battle with cancer this morning. He was the best father I could ever ask for. Every moment I’ve shared with him on and off stage was a gift. My heart is broken and I don’t think I’ll ever fully recover from this loss. I love you so much, Pop.”

He was the main songwriter and founder, with brother and drummer Alex Van Halen, bassist Mark Stone, and singer David Lee Roth, of the American rock band Van Halen. The group’s first LP “Van Halen,” though it climbed no higher than No. 19 in the U.S., would ultimately be certified for sales of 10 million copies.

It’s next five multi-platinum albums all reached the top 10; “1984,” released in its titular year, contained the band’s first and only No. 1 single, the synthesizer-driven “Jump,” and sifted another 10 million units.

Eddie Van Halen’s escalating drug abuse and alcoholism hastened his 2007 divorce from TV actress Valerie Bertinelli, his wife of 16 years, after a protracted separation. He entered rehab in 2007 and was reportedly sober from 2008.
