Now whether you are nursing a broken heart, been hit with some unfortunate news, or are just overwhelmed with how the week has been, music can help you cope. For this, we made a list of sad songs you can listen to so you can get that sadness out of your system and come back stronger.
1 – Slipping Through My Fingers by Meryl Streep and Amanda Seyfried
This song is originally by the Swedish band ABBA and was used in the tribute movie, Mamma Mia, for the band. Sung by these two talented actors, the song is about a parent watching their kid growing up and leaving the nest. Doesn’t matter if you are a parent or a kid listening to this song, this one is a real tear-jerker.
2 – Tears In Heaven by Eric Clapton
For those who don’t know, in 1991 Eric Clapton lost his son due to an accident and that gave birth to this song. You can hear the sadness, grief, and pain in Eric Clapton’s voice when you hear the song. Tears in Heaven has a beautiful pairing of a lead and bass guitar that goes together with his vocals. It is truly very sad and haunting.

4 – Blue by Kamal
This is one of the most relatable sad songs I’ve heard in a while. Blue is a track that is so soulful it will give you goosebumps. Kamal sings about the complexity of his feelings as he attempts to be free from them. He wants to get away from it as it’s for a person who doesn’t reciprocate it and at some point, we have all been there.
5 – Someone You Loved by Lewis Capaldi
The track has a simple piano melody that is consistent throughout the song but complements Lewis’ vocals really well. Someone you loved is a song about a man dealing with the loss of his wife. Often times we reach a moment in life where we need one person and only that person to help us cope but they aren’t around. This song truly captures how we feel in those moments.
6 – Lonely by Justin Bieber and Benny Blanco
Feeling alone in a room full of people is more common than you think. Through Lonely, Justin speaks about how he has it all but still finds himself to be alone. He also speaks about how he has been judged for his past mistakes and is suffering for them till this day. It’s a very relatable track as we have all been a place where we find ourselves being judged for something that we did in our immature days.
7 – Someone Like You by Adele
With a steady piano melody and a powerful voice, Adele tells us about the one that got away. More often than not, we all have that one person who we thought was our live happily ever after. But as Adele rightfully says “Sometimes it lasts in love but sometimes it hurts instead”

8 – Lovely by Billie Eilish and Khalid
Describing their battles with depression, these young artists come together to create one of the most haunting sad songs. Although they have diverse styles, Billie and Khalid’s voices blend perfectly as if it was meant to be that way. The track ends with a sad tune played on a violin which will make your heart heavy but will also make you feel like a weight has been lifted off your shoulders.
9 – Say Something by A Great Big World and Christina Aguilera
If you have ever been in a situation where you have the world to offer to a person and are waiting for them to say yes, this song is for you. This duo passionately sings about wanting to be the one but slowly losing faith as there is no reciprocation from the other side. Towards the end of the song they express that although they have love in their hearts, they must let go.
10 – Before You Go by Lewis Capaldi
Lewis was inspired to write this song after losing a family member who committed suicide. The song has Lewis asking questions like if there was anything he could have done to change their mind. He feels responsible as he wasn’t there to see the signs earlier. While this is a very sad song, it also encourages us to check up on the people we love and care about.
11 – When I Was Your Man by Bruno Mars
This is another one of those sad songs which talk about “the one that got away”. Through this track. Bruno sings about all the small things he should’ve done for his lady love but didn’t.
