Billie Eilish released a stunning new video about body image yesterday. She has posted about body image in the past over social media. Last year she posted a picture of herself in a bikini and surprisingly had some bad backlash from people. Billie is known to wear baggy clothes, so it was something new when she posted herself in a bikini. However, it did not go as well as she thought it would. Some fans thought she was being “sexualized” just because she turned 18.

In this video, she claims NOT MY RESPONSIBILITY. It is a well-shot video that expresses how she feels about the issue. It starts off slowly as she unzips a large black heavy jacket. The video progresses to her unzipping a light black sweatshirt after the jacket. After the sweatshirt, she has a tank top. Finally, she unzips her bra. Don’t worry that’s as far as it goes. Along with all this, there is trance-like music, cool graphics, along with her talking in poetic form.

The heart of the video is her outer beauty along with the words that she says. She questions “Do you know me?” “You have opinions about my opinions?” “Do you like my music?” “Opinions about my clothes?” “Opinions about my body?” She asserts that some people hate her clothes and some people love it. Some people use it to shame others or to shame her. She can feel people watching and staring at her. She cannot live up to people’s expectations or be what other people want her to be. She asks “do you want me to be smaller, taller, softer?” She claims that if she wears what is comfortable for her people think she doesn’t dress like a woman, and if she wears fewer clothes than people think she’s a slut.

The point of the video is to silence the haters and the negativity that surrounds her with body image. She is saying it is not her responsibility to dress the way that people want her to dress. Everyone has their own opinion about people, especially when it comes to clothes. Just because she wears baggy clothes people associate that one way, and when she dresses in a bikini they associate that another way. In reality, it really shouldn’t matter how she dresses. What really matters is the way she acts and how she uses her music. Billie is a young woman growing up in the spotlight so there are going to be ups and downs surrounding her appearance. This was a wonderful video that she did and it was a great way to show that she shouldn’t be weighed down by people’s opinions on how she dresses. She is beautiful the way she is and comfortable with the way she is. She is standing up for herself and empowering women everywhere to not be afraid of who they are and be comfortable with their body.
