In a decision poised to reshape awards-season broadcasting, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has inked a multi-year agreement granting YouTube exclusive global streaming rights to the Oscars, beginning with the 101st ceremony in 2029 and extending through 2033. The landmark deal comes as ABC, which has aired Hollywood’s biggest night for decades, retains broadcast rights through 2028.
According to the Variety report, Under the new agreement, the Oscars — including red carpet arrivals, behind-the-scenes access, and coverage of the Governors Ball — will stream live and free worldwide on YouTube, with additional availability for YouTube TV subscribers in the U.S. Dealmakers behind the move say the shift is designed to broaden the show’s reach, making the ceremony more accessible to the Academy’s expanding global audience through features like multi-language audio options and closed captioning.
“We are thrilled to enter into a multifaceted global partnership with YouTube to be the future home of the Oscars and our year-round Academy programming,” said Academy CEO Bill Kramer and Academy President Lynette Howell Taylor, in a joint statement. “The Academy is an international organization, and this partnership will allow us to expand access to the work of the Academy to the largest worldwide audience possible — which will be beneficial for our Academy members and the film community. This collaboration will leverage YouTube’s vast reach and infuse the Oscars and other Academy programming with innovative opportunities for engagement while honoring our legacy. We will be able to celebrate cinema, inspire new generations of filmmakers and provide access to our film history on an unprecedented global scale.”
