In an interview with SPIN, Pearl Jam’s lead guitarist Stone Gossard said that bassist Jeff Ament invented the riffs in Running. “Jeff had the main parts for that one, and we worked it over as a band,” Gossard said, adding: “I love the bridge. I don’t know what the hell those chords are that [guitarist] Mike [McCready]’s playing, but it sounds original.” He also said that the song was one of the band’s final collaborations with producer Andrew Watt.
Gossard stated that it was enjoyable to write an upbeat song and that Vedder’s “vocal dexterity here and on a few other spots on the album is just stunning.”
