Australian singer who has long been regarded as one of the finest exponents of jazz, soul, and R&B idioms, Renée Geyer has died at the age of 69. Guardian Reported.

The singer was in the hospital for hip surgery in Geelong but died from complications after surgery, her record label, the Mushroom Group, said in a statement on Tuesday. While in the hospital, she was also diagnosed with inoperable lung cancer.

She had commercial success as a solo artist in Australia, with “It’s a Man’s Man’s World”, “Heading in the Right Direction” and “Stares and Whispers” in the 1970s and “Say I Love You” in the 1980s. Geyer was also an internationally respected and sought-after backing vocalist, whose session credits include work with Sting, Chaka Khan, Toni Childs, and Joe Cocker.

Geyer died peacefully among family and friends, her label said. “Just last month, Renée sang to a full house and was looking forward to another busy year ahead doing what she loved most – performing for her loyal fans around the country,” the statement said.

“Renée lived her life as she performed – on her own terms and to the fullest. Beloved and respected, she was a force of nature and a national treasure, and her passing leaves a giant void in the Australian music industry.”

Geyer’s “impact as a female singer with both an uncontainable voice and personality has been immeasurable for Australian music,” comments ARIA and PPCA CEO, Annabelle Herd.

Marcia tweets, “Renée Geyer. A game changer. A soul diva. My sister in song. Heart felt condolences to her family and friends, and to the Australian music industry as a whole who have just lost a person who possessed one of the greatest voices I have ever heard.“

Support Act also wrote, “We’re deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Renée Geyer, one of the most highly regarded singers in contemporary music. Our thoughts are with her family and friends at this time.”
